Her brother now receives 'the best care he has ever had'

DeeAnna Cavinee's brother has an intellectual and developmental disability, and since the age of 9 he has received care from the State, community groups and charities. DeeAnna has seen firsthand the type of care her beloved brother received in the old state institution setting compared to the care at Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas (DSNWK).

"He is now receiving the best care he has ever had," DeeAnna wrote in a letter to the Topeka Capital-Journal in 2012. "He is in a community-based home administered by DSNWK in Russell. He is clean, safe, nutritiously fed, engaged in crafts and even employed for a few hours a week as a janitor's assistant. These may seem like insignificant achievements. They are not. He has been in situations where some or all of those conditions were missing."

DeeAnna was not only an advocate during her lifetime but she continued her advocacy for DSNWK by giving her largest gift (an annuity) after she was gone, in essence, leaving behind a legacy to support the work of DSNWK.

Designating your favorite charity as a beneficiary in your will or trust is very common. Beneficiary designations may also be made with retirement, investment or bank accounts, or life insurance policies. Such a legacy can be a lifeline of support to many individuals served by DSNWK who have intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We thank DeeAnna and others who are creating their own legacy of support by naming DSNWK as a beneficiary in their estate.
